* *Women Staying in Madina Without Mahram*
Salam
I stay in India.
My mother and sister want to visit Madina and stay there for a week.
But I have some urgent work in India.
Can I drop them to Madina and come back to India ?
Can they stay there for a week without mehram ?
I shall go to pick them after a week, however what is ruling of their dwelling there without mehram for a week.
وعلیکم السلام
If a woman travels a distance that is considered to be travel in Islamic law (i.e., 92 kilometers or more), it is necessary for her to be accompanied by a mahram (a male family member she cannot marry) or her husband. And it is haram (prohibited) to undertake such travel without a mahram or husband. However, if a woman travels with a mahram and stays at a place where her honor and dignity are secure, it is not necessary for the mahram to be with her during the stay at that place. Therefore, if you accompany your mother and sister on the journey to and from the Madina Munawara, and they stay at a secure location while you return, then there is no sin in this.
However if the place of stay is such where a woman's life and honor are not safe, then she is not permitted to stay there alone.
It is reported in Sahih Muslim: "Narrated by Abu Sa'id al-Khudri who said that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: 'It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to travel for three days or more, unless she is accompanied by her father, son, husband, brother, or a mahram of hers.'" (Sahih Muslim, Chapter on a Woman's Travel with a Mahram for Hajj and Other Purposes, Volume 1, Page 434, Majlis al-Barakat Al-Jamia Al-Ashrafia)
And Allah the Almighty and His Messenger know best.
